Okay maybe not all, but it’s a diet worth considering.

Today I wanted to talk to you guys about a ketogenic diet.

What’s a ketogenic diet? Well it would help if we knew what a ketone was. According to Nora T. Gedgaudas ketones are the energy by-product of the meatbolism of fat.

So basically the energy our body makes from metabolizing fat and using it for energy.

Yea so pretty much the exact thing you’re trying to do before the beach sesson rolls around, so listen up.

I know ketogenic diets have gotten a bad rap but I honestly have no idea why. We use ketones safely and effectively in all tissues of the body, especially the brain.

So much so that Felicia Drury Kliment the author of The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet explains that a diet high in saturated fats may help prevent seizures because “fat rather than sugar is burned as energy, producing ketones, which, when absorbed into the blood, calm the nerves, thereby lessening the severity of the seizures or stopping them all together”

That’s pretty dope if you ask me (I’ve suffered from a seizure before so I know how scary it can be)

“There are even studies to show the strong benefits of a ketogenic diet on virtually every manner of neurological disorders like; migraines, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrigs disease, autism, brain tumors, depression, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, post-anoxic brain injury, and posthypoxic myoclonus to name a few.” (Kliment 120)

All these companies like Big Pharma are trying to sell you medication that does more harm then good.

Let me let you in on a little secret; pretty much any ailment that the human body develops can be cured through food. Even cancer; since cancer thrives on glucose, eliminating glucose from your diet will literally starve the cancerous cell; and all this starts with a ketogenic diet.

Honestly I dont know where ketones have been all my life. I fell in love with ketosis the first day I tried it and with in a week I wanted to marry it.

I felt awesome. I was more clear headed, I was focused and sharp. I started getting curious as to why I was feeling this way and I found out that ketones are the brains perfered source of energy. “The brain can and does use glucose, especially when a person consumes a diet that is dominated by carbs or during an emergancy, but glucose isn’t as essential to the day to day functioning of the brain” (Gedgaudas 230).

So here I am; sharp, focused, and cutter than I’ve ever been.

This was an accomplishment I’ve had for years and I was happier then a giddy school girl to finally reach my goal, and I owe it all to ketones.

In fact I don’t think I will ever change the way I eat. I know my body pretty well and it only took me acouple of months to figure out how my body worked best in this sort of diet.

Here are a couple of ways you can get into ketosis:

1. Eat less protein

Yea you read that right. Your body is smarter than you and it will do anything to get the easiest form of energy, which is glucose. So where does protein play into this?

Well there’s a little process your body goes through called glyconeogenesis, which is when your body converts protein into glucose. This isn’t good if we’re trying to get into ketosis.

So the less protein you have the better (I’m currently not on a strictly ketogenic diet but when I was I was eating around 100 grams of protein a day).

2. Eat more saturated fats

Now I know what some of you might be thinking.

Aren’t saturated fats unhealthy?

The straight answer’s NO. Not if the source of saturdated fats come from animals that have been pasture raised. So eat more stuff like grassfed butter, bacon, bacon fat, egg yolks, grassfed beef etc.

Remember ketosis happens when your body starts using fat for energy. As human beings we are meant to have a diet higher in these kinds of fats rather than higher in carbs.

The brain is made up of more than 50% fat. In facts according to Nora T. Gedgaudas 50 percent of the fat found in the human brain is in the form of saturdated fat. So enjoy that grassfed steak with butter on top or enjoy your eggs and bacon your brain will thank you.

When your main objective is to get into a ketosis state you have to make sure that about 70 to 80 percent of your calories are coming from fats.

3. Eat less carbs

Since we’re trying to start using ketones instead of glucose for energy the obvious route is to start eating less carbs.

I usually like to stick with 30 to 50 grams of carbs on days I workout and on days that I have off I tend to have 0 grams. The only carbs that I would get would be from veggies which have no direct effect on insulin.

4. Give it some time

Getting into true ketosis isn’t easy and takes a couple of weeks if you do everything to the T. So if your not feeling any different or burning any bodyfat within the first week or two, keep going. Give it another 2 weeks and see how you feel.

Remember that everyone is different and we’re all gonna react different to ketosis. The point is to get to know your OWN body. Try new things, whether it’s a different training program or a different way of eating.

The more you try the better the chances are of you finding out what works best for YOU.
